Haut-Medoc, is actually south of the the Medoc region, 5 Grands Crus Classés (Great Growths) of Medoc Classification in 1855 totally 61, except the Chateau Haut-Brion located in Pessac-Léognan, all the other 60 are based in Haut-Médoc. However, in fact, only five Chateaux in Grands Crus Classés named as Haut-Medoc appellation. The remaining 55 are in the adjacent and smaller in size appellations,such as: Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Julien and Saint Estèphe. Estates: 5 Grands Crus Classés in Haut-Médoc, Many Crus Bourgeois Soil: Gravels, clay and Clayey-limestone. Area: 4,270 ha (10,500 acres). Major grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec. Age: 5 to 10 years and more. Vintages(recommended): 2005, 2004, 2003, 2000, 1998, 1995 Character: Haut-Médoc - such as in Médoc - is a land of red wine. They are generous, not too powerful red wines with a delicate bouquet of vanilla and black fruits. It located in Left Bank of Bordeaux, around 4 famous villages in Medoc. It has 5 Grands Crus Classés in 1855 classification, include Château La Lagune (3rd Growth), Château La Tour Carnet (4th Growth) and the 5th Growths Château Belgrave, Château Cantemerle and Château de Camensac. There are also more than 100 Crus Bourgeois, which include the most outstanding are : Chateau Cissac, Chateau Citran, Chateau Beaumount, Chateau Sociando-Mallet, etc.
