。 | Saint-Emilion is the largest well-known Bordeaux AOC, which is located on the right bank of Dordogne Valley in Bordeaux. Merlot is the predominant grape used in the Saint-Emilion planting. There capacity for wine production approximately is equal to 2/3 of the entire Medoc, but Saint-Emilion also is one of the most beautiful villages in France. The Saint-Emilion official Classification was created in 1954 and revised in 1986. The classification in St-Emilion is complex. Do not confuse Saint-Emilion Grand-Cru and Saint-Emilion Grand-Cru-Classé, the latter is fewer and much better. Here have Saint-Emilion and the surrounding 'satellite appellations' ―― They are known as 'satellites' because the area's more prestigious wine estates historically resented these supposedly inferior wines using the Saint-Emilion name, these satellite appellations under the AOC for Saint-Emilion Grand-Cru and Saint-Emilion Grand-Cru-Classé such as Lussac Saint-Emilion, Montagne Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, etc. Estates: 61 Grand-Cru, many famous estates and little estates. Soil: Limestone, Clayey-limestone, Gravels Area: 5,500 ha (13,600 acres) Major grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc Age: Saint-Emilion AOC: 3 to 8 years Saint-Emilion Grand Cru: 5 to 12 years Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé: 15 to 25 years and more Vintages(recommended): 2005, 2003, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1982 Character: Saint Emilion wines are considered the most robust of the Bordeaux. They are generous, very colored, release truffles, toasted bread, cooked red fruits aroma, and reach their maturity quicker than other red Bordeaux. Saint-Emilion is the oldest wine area of the Bordeaux region. The UNESCO organization recognized the great terroir of Saint Emilion and put the site on the World Heritage List (see Dec 2, 1999 report). The most famous estates are Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Ausone, both of them are Bordeaux top 8 eastes.
