Saint-Julien lies on the left bank of Medoc. It encompasses more than 700 hectares of area, is the smallest appellation of four famous villages, but has 11 Grands Crus Classés in 1855 classification. The rest basically are excellent Crus Bourgeois. It can be said that it is the highest quality of averages in Bordeaux famous villages. Wine lovers generally considered Saint-Julien as the guarantee of confidence.
Estates: 11 Grands Crus Classés, take up 80% in total; 6 Crus Bourgeois which occupy 15%, 9 Cru Artisans and others take up 5%.
Soil: Gravels
Area: more than 700 ha (cover 6% vineyards in Medoc)
Major grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Age: 10 to 15 years and better vintage even more.
Vintages(recommended): 2005, 2003, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989
Character: Just a little bit less powerful than Pauillac and less coarseness than Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien wines are very aromatized, with black currant, cocoa and cedar fragrance. Their taste are very rich, delicate and soft, with delicious and delicate floral fragrance and a solid body. They are harmonious and well balanced red wines. Saint-Julien is the right balance between Pauillac and Margaux. The quality is so good in Saint-Julien, that second wines from those chateaux are very attractive.
The king wine of Saint-Julien is Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases. Robert Parker and many wine critics believe that Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases is the first and most tangible challenger to the first growths in the four 'super-second'. Chateau Léoville-Las-Cases lies in the border of Saint-Julien and Pauillac, adjacent to Chateau Latour. Its wine is quite similar to Latour that is bold, elagant, powerful and tannic, better to drink after aging. Next is another 'super-second' Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou, which has a mumber of vintages can compare with the first growths. If Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases looks like Latour, that Ducru-Beaucaillou is similar to Lafite. Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is a gentle balanced wine, both with Margaux’s aroma and Pauillac’s body, there is some strength as well as grace, chivalrous female style. The famous estates in Saint-Julien still have: Chateau Beychevelle, Chateau Talbot and so on. In addition to Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases, other estates are basically similar with Ducru-Beaucaillou from the style.
