Chateau Guerry

History
Chateau Guerry is Magrez’s recent acquisition, a Cote de Bourg, it’s a vineyard on a rounded hill, the chateau is on the top and the vines all around it, so as a result, and the sun works its way all around it. It is this option of having grapes that come from a sun exposure that is entirely different. So, Magrez chooses this promising chateau.

This is the oldest estate in the Cote de Bourg region, going back some three centuries. Chateau Guerry is located in a region full of history and archaeological remains. The Chateau is a lovely country house built in 1790. Winegrowing dates from the Roman conquest, circa 50 B.C. some of the first Vitis biturica vines—the ancestor of the present-day Cabernet Sauvignon—were planted here.

The clay-limestone soil and slope vineyards with good sun exposure constitute an optimum terroir for slow, complete ripening. The grapes are picked by hand, destermmed, and lightly crushed. Fermentation of grapes from separate plots makes it possible to fine-tune the final blend for maximum quality. Ageing takes plus in fine-grained oak barrels.

Nowadays’ owner: Bernard Magrez

Vineyard magnate Bernard Magrez, whose holdings encompass 21 properties in the Bordeaux region, including legendary Chateau Pape-Clement, and 11 other properties throughout the world, is the man behind this little superstar of a wine. As with all of his properties, everything is done by hand with the help of oenologist consultant Michel Rolland. They make a fabulously rich and concentrated wine from poor soil that is made for winegrowing.
