History Chateau Bois Pertuis is located in Saint-Christophe de Double, 20 km north of Saint-Emillion on the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela. This region, known as “Les Hauts de Saint-Emilion” was well-known for artistic glassmaking in the 17th century, also a close neighbor of the Lalande de Pomerol and Cotes de Castillon appellations. The vineyard is in the heart of La Double forest, famous for producing stave oak used to make quality barrels, and was also the scene of a battle on October 20th 1587 between the army of King Henri III and that of the future King Henri IV (the winner) at the Battle of Coutras. It is the outermost outpost of the Bordeaux region, but with a winemaking tradition that dates back 2,000 years under the Romans. Accounts tell of great wines being made here back then and it remains true today. Magrez saw potential when he bought the property some years ago. He makes two wines at Bois Pertuis: a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from machine-harvested grapes that's priced is relatively cheap; and Excellence, this is produced in very small quantities from plots of old vines, made with Merlot grapes from the best vineyard parcels that have been hand-selected to ensure only perfect fruit goes into the wine. All of this to produce fewer than 400 cases. The grapes are harvested at optimum maturity and then sorted on a vibrating table. They then undergo pre-fermentation maceration. Grapes from each plot are separately fermented in order to fine-tune blending. The wine is partly aged in oak barrels and partly in vats. Bois Pertuis has never been particularly lauded for its terroir. And yet the wine itself was remarkable, with spicy, red-fruit aromas and a luxurious, almost foggy richness marked by great finesse. And price also very reasonable. Nowadays’ Owner:Bernard Magrez Vineyard magnate Bernard Magrez, whose holdings encompass 21 properties in the Bordeaux region, including legendary Chateau Pape-Clement, and 11 other properties throughout the world, is the man behind this little superstar of a wine. As with all of his properties, everything is done by hand with the help of oenologist consultant Michel Rolland. They make a fabulously rich and concentrated wine from poor soil that is made for winegrowing.
