History The vines are planted around a former 16th century fortress in a part of the Medoc appellation that had very dynamic trade relations with the rest of the world thanks to the part of Saint-Christoly du Medoc. Nowadays’ owner: Bernard Magrez Vineyard magnate Bernard Magrez, whose holdings encompass 21 properties in the Bordeaux region, including legendary Chateau Pape-Clement, and 11 other properties throughout the world, is the man behind this little superstar of a wine. As with all of his properties, everything is done by hand with the help of oenologist consultant Michel Rolland. They make a fabulously rich and concentrated wine from poor soil that is made for winegrowing. La Temperance Chateau les Grands Chenes(Second Label): 10.5 hectares. Soil: Chateau les Grands Chenes(First Label): 60% gravel and 40% clay-limestone soil. La Temperance Chateau les Grands Chenes(Second Label):50% gravelly-clay, 20% sandy-clay and 30% clay-limestone. Grape Varieties: 50%merlot, 45%Carbernet Sauvignon, 5% cabernet Franc. Average age of vines: 30 years. Cultivation Density: Chateau les Grands Chenes(First Label): 8000 vines per hectare. La Temperance Chateau les Grands Chenes(Second Label): 7500 vines per hectare. Viticulture: Traditional Bordeaux pruning method. Bud thinning in spring followed by leaf thinning in summer, and green harvesting if necessary. Winemaking: The grapes are hand-picked into small crates, sorted both before and ofter destemming, and put into vat using gravity flow, cool pre-fermentation maceration. Manual punching down of the cap. Malolatic fermentation and ageing on the lees in new French oak barrels. Yield: Chateau les Grands Chenes(First Label): 40 to 50 hl per hectare. Character: Best Vintages: Awards: The 2003 vintage won a gold medal at 2005 Paris competition. The 2002 vintage received a gold medal at 2005 Brussels and Bordeaux competitions. The 2001 vintage received a “coup de Coeur”(special favourite) distinction from the 2005 Guide Hachette, and the Wine spectator gave it second rating worldwide in terms of value for money out of 150 wines from several countries. The chateau also obtained a Prix d’Excellence at the Vinalies Nationales, organized by les OEologues De France in 2004, and a gold medal at the 2004 Brussels competition. Chateau Les Grands Chenes was awarded a gold medal for the 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 vintages at the Concours General Agricole in Paris.
