History
The 1855 classification was drawn up by the Bordeaux Wine Brokers’ Union of the Universal Exhibition in Pairs organized by the imperial government of Napoleon Ⅲ. The classification replaced unofficial classifications and reflected the realities of a market which had existed for over a century. Today, 61 Medoc growths (except for Haut-Brion) remain in the classification, which went from 1st to 5th growth. Desmirail is on the third level together with thirteen other growths, including the famous Chateau Palmer.Château Desmirail was once part of the vast Rauzan estate owned by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan in the mid-17th century. Over time this estate was divided, and by the time of the 1855 Classification, had been separated into the estates of Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Desmirail, and Château Marquis de Terme. Mr. Sipiere was Desmirail’s owner at the time of the 1855 classification. He was also the manager at Chateau Margaux.
Mendelssohn was a famous composer, and his nephew, Robert, became the owner of the chateau in 1905. Michel is the name of one of the 20 plots at the estate and also the name of Martial Michel, a glove manufacturer, who owned it from 1923 to 1938. And later the estate was purchased by Lucien Lurton. Lurton is a famous family of winemakers. It took Lucien Lurton twenty years of patience to reconstitute, parcel by parcel, the original estate. He then bought a building in the village of Cantenac to transform them into cellars. The first harvest took place in 1981. In 1992, at the age of 33, Denis Lurton, Lucien’s son, took over the running of Deamirail from his father.

Nowadays’ Owner: Denis Lurton
Denis Lurton is not a man of compromise; he abandoned his career at the Bordeaux Bar to satisfy his passion for the theatre. Now happy to be back in the Medoc of his childhood, he has devoted himself with the same authenticity to working the vine. Consolidating the knowledge he had gathered over the years on holidays, he obtained a tasting diploma from the Faculty of Oenology in Bordeaux University. Through observation and daily practice, he tries to maintain his wine at the highest level of quality.
