Wine Advocate #85 (2/1993) Rating:85 Drink:1993-2005
I lament the fact that few "second" wines actually resemble their more esteemed siblings. Why? As severe as the selection can be for the grand vin, little selection is employed for most second wines as diluted cuvees, young vines, and whatever is tossed into these blends. With that warning in mind, the 1989 is a deuxieme wine that displays some of Lafite's personality. The vanillin, smoky, lead pencil nose is unmistakable. In the mouth, there is real focus, character, and elegance. This tasty Lafite-look-alike will drink handsomely for 6-12 or more years.

Clean and fresh, with lovely spice and blackberry aromas and flavors and medium tannins. A real charmer. Best after 1994.

Lovely, lovely claret. Decanted an hour before drinking, should have had 90mins really as it fleshed out and took on weight over the first hour of drinking, holding all the time it was in the glass. Fragrant, elegant, just very classic and classy in the traditional style.
